"CBS News interviewed former FYZICAL President Mike Graves at the annual Brand Triumph extravaganza showcase of physical therapy technology and business solutions in West Palm Beach, Florida June 24th 2017."
There is such a wide database of knowledge available to individuals today through something we like to call the 'Internet.' We can all be experts of our own delight because of a simple tool named Google. Search for recipes, medicines, mechanical repairs, etc. and Google can make you an instant subject matter expert. For physical therapists, this can become a challenge. The internet features a wide range of content available describing exercises and techniques for treating injuries.
Unfortunately, although many of these articles will feature accurate content and how-to directions, there are two major concerns with using YouTube videos and online directions to perform your physical therapy exercises.
1. Every injury is unique: Although you may have the same exact injury as another individual, that does not mean you will be performing the same exercises. Each person has different intensity levels depending on age, gender, severity of injury, etc. and a customized treatment plan is to be executed separately for all. Unfortunately physical therapy cannot be a cookie cutter industry, where one injury means do these three exercises. A physical therapist can track your progress, develop a plan with you and work with you 1-on-1.
2. Safety: With no one watching you, physical therapy treatment can be dangerous and actually negatively impact your health. Without a trained professional training you on how to perform exercises, in addition to them watching you to make sure you continue to perform it correctly, you can be doing more harm to your body than good.
