Orlando Physical Therapists Help Seniors Avoid Falls
Orlando, FL – March 17, 2014 – FYZICAL's physical therapists will conduct a balance and falls awareness event at The Wayne Densch YMCA 3rd Annual Community Health Fair March 25, 2014 starting at 10 am.
"Falling is a common and potentially serious problem for people over the age of 65", said Dr. Idler Bonhomme. "Factors that may contribute to an impaired sense of balance include poor posture, disease, and inadequate strength, flexibility, and endurance."
Physical therapists will educate the public about the importance of balance in preventing falls. Activities will include tests for postural alignment, functional reach, standing balance, and the ability to go from sitting to standing to walking.
"Many older adults who experience balance and mobility conditions begin to feel like the world is full of obstacles," says Dr. Bonhomme.
"As a result, they avoid going out and getting around to the degree they would like. It then becomes a quality-of-life issue, which may be improved with appropriate intervention. Many types of therapeutic exercises can limit the effects of osteoporosis, arthritis, and swollen joints that can lead to balance problems and falls."
