North Carolina Direct Access Laws

North Carolina law allows patients total, unrestricted access to physical therapy. According to state law, no type of physician referral is required for a physical therapist to evaluate or treat a patient. A physical therapist must refer any patient with a medical diagnosis of disease or treatment beyond the physical therapist’s scope of practice to an appropriate physician. Physical therapists may not determine a medical diagnosis.
