Welcome to FYZICAL Brevard's Fight the Fall Newsletter!

More than one in four older adults fall annually but falls affect us all – from our loved ones to caregivers, falls impact us physically, emotionally and mentally. In this newsletter, we’ll be sharing information about our balance training program and tips on how to stay balanced so we can all Fight the Fall together!

How to decrease your risk of falling

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has found that each year, over 300 million older people are treated in an emergency room due to a fall. You may be at risk of falling if you have lower body weakness, Vitamin C deficiency, trouble walking, vision impairment, poor footwear, home hazards or while using certain medications. If you are experiencing one of the factors above or a combination of the above factors, follow the tips below to help decrease your chance of falling:

  • Fall-proof your home: Install non-slip rugs and carpets, make sure you have proper lighting across your home, have handrails on both sides of your stairs, and tidy your home to lessen trip hazards.
  • Get your eyes checked regularly! Poor eyesight will increase your risk of falling. Ensure your eyeglass or contact prescription is up to date.
  • Participate in strength and balance training programs.
  • Invest in a pair of non-skid shoes!

At FYZICAL, fall prevention is the cornerstone of our mission; “Balance” is part of our name after all! Our therapists know how important balance and walking is for independent living, as well as enjoying life in general. We have developed a world-class balance rehabilitation program that can be tailored to each individual’s needs. Poor balance may indicate other health issues

A recent study from the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that maintaining your balance skills as you age is linked to longevity. Someone with better balance will have good physical fitness, cognitive abilities, and nervous system which are all critical factors that those with exceptional health typically have. While attempting to maintain your balance, your body's sensors in your limbs are connecting with sensors in your ears and eyes. All of these connections are integrated in an area of your brain that send messages to your motor nerves which helps keep you balanced. If your body successfully makes these connections you're more likely to be in good health. Practice your balance by trying to stand on one-leg for 10 seconds. How did you do? If you found yourself feeling unsteady, we may be able to help.

What are the benefits of our SOS System?

At FYZICAL, we have changed the way balance therapy is performed through our Safety Overhead Support (SOS) System. This is an overhead harness system that consists of a trolly attached to the ceiling which allows our patients, while secured in a simple body harness, the freedom to safely perform functional types of activities. We are able to challenge our patients appropriately to achieve the best possible results with balance and vestibular function without the patient having a fear of falling. The SOS system is utilized to address the following conditions: gait retraining, neurological rehabilitation, balance therapy, vestibular dysfunction, Meniere’s Disease, post-surgical patients and more.
