Pelvic Health Physical Therapy can be a game changer for anyone who is suffering with pelvic, sacroiliac and low back pain, along with incontinence, constipation, hormonal and other pelvic area issues.
Dr Kara Wood (DPT) is a valued member of our team and has completed the course work necessary to earn a Certification has a Pelvic Health PT Specialist.
I realize that there is a bit of a stigma regarding pelvic health in general and especially when discussing an internal exam. Please continue reading to learn about my experience and why
I feel that it is so important for me to share my experience.
I recently scheduled an evaluation with Dr Kara due to chronic sacral (tail bone), ischial (sit bone), right pubic, buttock and upper hamstring pain and tightness.
These symptoms arrived after pulling a weed in 2019 when I immediately felt intense pain in the lower portion of my buttock (swelling occurred) and down my leg. I also had a history of low back pain for multiple years for which I had to succumb to surgery in 2020. I was hopeful that all of the pain would diminish post surgery, but the pain that I listed above has continued to hang on after many bouts of PT and other interventions.
Dr Kara evaluated the strength of my pelvic, core, hip and leg muscles externally and found some weaknesses. There was a concern that the pelvic floor muscles were not firing to their full potential. We discussed an internal exam to determine the strength of the pelvic floor muscles. I agreed and it was determined that the right Obturator muscle is a major cause of my pain and some of the weakness.
The obturator muscles are a pair of muscles (obturator internus and externus) deep in the pelvis that primarily function to externally rotate the hip. They help stabilize the hip joint and are also involved in other movements. Dysfunction in these muscles, especially the internal, can be associated with pelvic floor issues, pelvic, buttock and hamstring pain, and pain in the genitals, perineum, or anus and pubis.
Dr Kara has prescribed exercises and an overall treatment plan to assist with reducing the pain and increasing the strength. I am already feeling a difference in my level of pain as I am now able to isolate
the muscles in my exercise program.
If you are experiencing similar symptoms or other symptoms such as those mentioned above and more: incontinence, constipation, hip aching especially with peri-menopause or menopause, sexual pain/dysfunction
pregnancy, post-partum, diastisis recti (tearing of the abdominal muscles), low back and tail bone pain, then do yourself a favor and call to schedule an appointment with Dr Kara. The information that you receive
from the evaluation and subsequent treatment plan just may be a life changer!
In good health,
Dr Lorri
