Ménière’s disease (idiopathic endolymphatic hydrops) is a rare inner ear disorder that affects your sense of balance and hearing. People with this condition experience symptoms like vertigo, ringing in their ears (tinnitus) and difficulty hearing. Symptoms start without warning, then go away — only to come back time and time again. The condition can take a major toll on your daily life.

In the inner ear, Meniere's disease typically involves the following:

  • Endolymphatic Hydrops: This is the primary feature, where there's an abnormal buildup of fluid (endolymph) in the inner ear. This fluid accumulation can cause the cochlea and vestibular organs to swell.

  • Distortion of Structures: The excess fluid causes distortion of the inner ear's delicate structures. The cochlea, which is responsible for hearing, might look expanded, and the vestibular system, responsible for balance, might appear swollen.

  • Damage to Hair Cells: The increased pressure and fluid can damage the sensory cells (hair cells) in the cochlea and vestibular system. This damage is often shown as atrophy or loss of these cells in medical illustrations.

  • Possible Membrane Ruptures: In some cases, the membranes that separate the different fluid-filled compartments of the inner ear may rupture, leading to further fluid mixing and damage.
