Balance uses three body systems: The eyes, the body, and the inner ears. When the three systems are not working together or giving the brain inaccurate information, it can cause imbalance, dizziness, or feelings of being “off”. Balance can be tested in a variety of ways through observation of walking (dynamic balance) and standing still (static balance). With the ability to identify balance deficits and falls risks, appropriate testing and can lead to appropriate treatment and prevention of falls.
Computerized Dynamic Posturography: CDP
The Bertec Balance Advantage is FYZICAL's most specialized and unique piece of equipment. This machine is capable of performing a computerized dynamic posturography (CDP) test to give a diagnostic look at the three balance systems (Visual, Somatosensory, Vestibular) for deficits that may be contributing to your imbalance or dizziness symptoms. The test measures movement (or postural sway) under six different conditions where the floor and visual surround move both independently and simultaneously.
The test takes about ten minutes to complete. You will wear our harness the entire test so no falls occur throughout. The results of the CDP test are important in determining what part or parts of the balance systems are weak. This information is then used by the vestibular therapist to design the most appropriate plan of care for balance and dizziness retraining.
The Bertec also incorporates several training modules for retraining each of the three balance systems, as well as protocols for treatment of concussions.
