Direct Access: What Is It and Why Is It Important?

What does direct access mean? It’s simple, really. Direct access means that YOU call the shots!
As a patient, you have the right to initiate physical therapy on your own terms. To put it
straightforward, you can receive treatment from a physical therapist with NO referral or orders
from a physician!

While direct access is available in all fifty states, it’s important to note that each state of course
abides by their own policies and procedures. South Dakota is one of just twenty states that
allow patients unrestricted access to PT without a referral. The catch?! There is none! No type
of physician referral is necessary and there are no provisions for treatment!

Direct access to physical therapy is essential to provide you the ability to receive the care you
need, whenever you need it. This includes immediate evaluation, diagnosis and treatment to
determine if physical therapy is the right fit.

What concerns can physical therapy address?
- Dizziness and/or Imbalance
- Musculoskeletal Pain, Discomfort or Injury
- Fall Trauma
- Poor Posture
- Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ)/Jaw Pain
- Rheumatoid and Osteoarthritis
- Osteoporosis
- Preventative Measures of Aging
- Urinary Incontinence/Pelvic Pain
- Fibromyalgia
- Decreased Mobility or Range of Motion (ROM)
- Poor Endurance

Really, it’s as easy as 1-2-3!
1. Research physical therapy clinics in your area to determine which is right for your
healthcare needs.
2. Call the clinic - on your own terms, with NO doctor’s orders.
3. Schedule an initial evaluation!

Most insurance companies cover physical therapy visits. Our skilled team will gladly review
your benefits and explain coverage outlined per your policy during your visit.
