FYZICAL Therapy and Balance Centers of Chicago Garfield Ridge is one of the very few facilities certified in Chicago Garfield Ridge (and the only one on the south side) to offer treatment of soft tissue injures through use of the ASTYM® system.
What Is ASTYM® Treatment?
ASTYM® treatment is a therapy that regenerates healthy soft tissues (muscles, tendons, etc.), and eliminates or reduces unwanted scar tissue that may be causing pain or movement restrictions. ASTYM® treatment is highly effective and even works when other approaches routinely fail. One of the main reasons ASTYM® treatment is so much more effective than other treatments is that it was scientifically developed to resolve the underlying cause of soft tissue problems, rather than just trying to temporarily relieve symptoms. It is one of the most researched and effective therapy treatments available. ASTYM® treatment is unmatched in its ability to resolve tendinopathies, scar tissue problems, and other soft tissue dysfunctions.
The ASTYM® System is an advanced form of soft tissue mobilization which enable certified clinicians to effectively initiate remodeling and regeneration of dysfunctional tissue. Treatment is performed with ergonomically designed instruments to allow rapid identification and effective treatment of areas exhibiting texture changes associated with soft tissue scar/fibrosis or chronic tendinopathy. Exercise and activity are then integrated to guide the body's healing in the most advantageous manner possible. Continuation of work, athletic and recreational activities throughout the treatment process promotes optimal healing.
Generally, chronic soft tissue problems are due to scarring or degeneration. Soft tissues include muscles, tendons and ligaments. Both scarring and degeneration are common and can result in pain and limitations in movement. Common diagnoses that respond well to ASTYM® are Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Lateral and Medial Epicondylitis, Patellar Tendinitis, DeQuevain's tenosynovitis, wrist sprains, Plantar fasciitis, Achilles Tendinitis, IT band syndrome, post-surgical scarring and fibrosis, to name a few.
The body's soft tissues degenerate when inadequate healing occurs, and over time the tissues degrade. Degenerated tissues are weak and prone to injury. Degeneration can be caused by many factors, including age, intense use, improper movement, weakened muscles putting extra stress on other tissues, disease, etc. Most chronic tendinopathies are primarily degenerative in nature.
Scarring can happen on top of the skin, but often the biggest problems come from scar tissue that forms inside the body around joints, muscles, tendons and/or ligaments. The body naturally lays down some scar tissue in response to irritation or injury. The fibrous, strong scar tissue is meant to reinforce an area, but often it ends up restricting movement and causing pain. The causes of problem scar tissue can be injury (such as a sprained ankle, car accident, etc.), a surgery (good surgery can be done, but the body's response with scar tissue can prevent a full recovery), intense or over use of soft tissues (such as sports, repetitive work, activity beyond your fitness level, etc.), sprains or other strains on soft tissues.
Typical Treatment Process
Patient is evaluated by an ASTYM® System-certified clinician for appropriateness
If appropriate, the patient is seen twice a week for the ASTYM® System, stretching and exercise
The program is supplemented with a home stretching routine
As the soft tissue changes, pain decreases and function increases
Use of braces/splints is minimized
Treatment lasts 6 to 12 sessions
At discharge function is improved, pain is decreased and education is provided to avoid physical stresses with activities in the future
At FYZICAL Chicago Garfield Ridge, our state-of-the-art Therapy Pool provides the ultimate atmosphere for physical rehabilitation and superior conditioning. If you or a loved one has an injury or condition that makes weight-bearing exercise too painful or risky, such as arthritis, stroke, or recent surgery on the knee, hip, back or neck, then pool therapy is the ideal way to get moving again and begin the rehabilitation process.
Why is Aquatic Therapy So Effective?
During aquatic therapy, the buoyancy of the water, as well as the viscosity, offers a balance between decreased weight bearing and resistance that only a pool can offer. The FYZICAL aquatic program is provided in a warm-water pool (approximately 89 degrees) by highly qualified therapists who design personalized exercise programs on a one-on-one basis. Because the water provides support for weight-bearing joints, treatment can begin sooner. Some of the benefits associated with aquatic therapy include:
Water offers special qualities that make rehab less painful
Stimulates healing and strengthening of injured tissue
Decreases pain from inflammation
Stimulates endorphins that help control pain and alleviate tension
Increases flexibility and range of motion
Reduces joint stiffness
Increases muscle strength, tone, and endurance
Initiates walking in a low impact environment
Replicates the proper biomechanics of land-based movements
Improves cardiovascular endurance
For clients who are candidates for pool therapy, FYZICAL therapists will develop a customized aquatic treatment program with exercises and hands-on therapy designed to decrease your pain and accelerate your recovery.

The Aquatic Center features a Swimex 600T pool heated to 90 degrees. This multi-depth pool generates water resistance up to 6.5 mph (That is more than enough for even a highly trained swimmer). There is also therapeutic exercise equipment, specifically designed for working out in the water, including a running platform. All patients are supervised by their physical therapist during the one-on-one session. Also in the aquatic center are a private changing room, a shower and a towel service. - See more at: http://www.fyzicalchicago.com/Aquatics-Center/a~6629/article.html#sthash.G0LRLHsK.dpuf
