Life After Stroke

Rebuilding Life After Stroke

Every stroke survivor has a story — and at FYZICAL De Zavala, our mission is to help you write the next chapter. Recovery after a stroke can feel overwhelming, but with the right therapy team and a personalized plan, you can rebuild your mobility, communication, and confidence one step at a time.

Understanding Stroke and Its Effects

A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, depriving brain cells of oxygen. Depending on which part of the brain is affected, a stroke can cause:

• Weakness or paralysis on one side of the body
• Trouble speaking or understanding language
• Difficulty with balance and coordination
• Changes in vision, memory, or mood
• Challenges with everyday activities like dressing, eating, or walking

Every stroke is different — and so is every recovery journey. That’s why our team tailors each treatment plan to your unique goals and abilities.

Why Stroke Rehabilitation Matters

The brain has an incredible ability to adapt and form new pathways — a process called neuroplasticity. Stroke therapy helps activate and strengthen these new connections through repetitive, guided practice. Early, consistent rehabilitation is key to:

• Improving movement and strength
• Enhancing balance and coordination
• Regaining independence in daily life
• Preventing future complications like falls, contractures, or depression

At FYZICAL De Zavala, we combine compassion, expertise, and the latest rehabilitation science to help you make steady, meaningful progress.

Our Multidisciplinary Stroke Recovery Program

Stroke recovery works best when different therapies come together. At FYZICAL De Zavala, we offer comprehensive care under one roof, including Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech-Language Pathology.

Physical Therapy (PT): Rebuilding Strength, Balance, and Mobility

Our physical therapists focus on restoring your body’s movement and strength. Through guided exercises, balance retraining, and gait training, we help you:

• Improve walking and posture
• Strengthen weak muscles
• Reduce spasticity and stiffness
• Improve coordination and endurance
• Prevent falls and build confidence moving independently

We also use cutting-edge technology and evidence-based techniques to promote safe, functional movement.

Occupational Therapy (OT): Regaining Independence in Daily Life

Occupational therapists help you relearn the skills that make daily life possible — from dressing and grooming to cooking and using your phone. After a stroke, OT helps you:

• Relearn self-care and home management tasks
• Improve arm and hand function
• Adapt your home environment for safety and accessibility
• Address visual or cognitive changes that affect independence

We focus on real-world recovery — helping you not just move better but live better.

Speech-Language Pathology (SLP): Reconnecting Through Communication

Speech therapy helps those affected by:

• Aphasia: difficulty speaking or understanding language
• Dysarthria: slurred or weak speech muscles
• Dysphagia: trouble swallowing safely

Our speech-language pathologists will guide you through tailored exercises and strategies to strengthen communication, improve speech clarity, and ensure safe eating and drinking. We also support family members in learning how to best communicate with their loved ones during recovery.

Your Recovery Journey: What to Expect

Every patient’s timeline is different, but most stroke therapy programs follow a few key stages:

1. Evaluation: We assess your current abilities, challenges, and personal goals.
2. Customized Plan: Your therapy team develops an integrated plan combining PT, OT, and SLP as needed.
3. Consistent Therapy: You’ll participate in regular sessions focused on function, strength, and confidence.
4. Progress Review: We track measurable improvements and adjust your plan as you gain skills.
5. Home Program & Support: Our therapists teach you and your caregivers exercises and strategies to continue progress at home.

Recovery may take time, but every small victory adds meaningful improvement.
