Videonystagmography (VNG) Balance Testing

At FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Centers, we are committed to serving our patients with the best technology and resources available. Our VNG (Videonystagmography) testing system allows for a more in-depth look into the vestibular system to find a solution for your balance disorders, dizziness, and vestibular challenges.

What is VNG Testing?

VNG testing is used to assess and analyze the vestibular system and determine if it is functioning appropriately. It can also help determine if there is a peripheral problem (problem with the inner ear) or if there may be a central problem (something happening in the brain) causing dizziness or imbalance symptoms.

One of our doctors of audiology will guide you through a series of tests. You will wear goggles to record your eye movements for the entire test. There is a reflex between the inner ear and the eyes so we measure eye movement to assess the inner ear balance system. You will start by watching a dot move around on a screen. After that, the audiologist will have you lie on a table in different positions to assess for any unusual eye movements. The last part of the test involves putting air in your ears to change the temperature of the inner ears. Changing the temperature of the inner ear causes it to activate so we can assess how the ear is working. The results of this test will be reviewed with you at the end of your appointment. VNG test results will help guide your medical team as to the best treatment to improve any vestibular deficits and help you return to your previous level of function.

Balance Disorders and Vertigo

Dizziness, loss of balance, and light-headedness are several reasons to consider seeking VNG testing. These detrimental side effects can impede your ability to complete daily tasks. Dizziness and vertigo (experiencing spinning or motion when remaining still) can also lead to increased loss of balance and even falls for older adults. Our Physical Therapists often work hand in hand with our Audiologist in order to train both the motor system and vestibular system in order to decrease the dizziness and feelings of imbalance for return to a safe and active lifestyle.

Moving Platform Posturography Testing

During the Moving Platform Posturography Test you'll stand on a plate with a safety harness on in an environment that will challenge your balance systems in different ways. The test will gather data that your physical therapist will evaluate and create a treatment plan which will include balance re-training exercises.
