How Physical Therapy Can Enhance the Lives of Parkinson's Patients

Parkinson’s Disease impacts millions of people globally. In the United States alone, more than 60,000 new cases are diagnosed annually, and men are 1.5x more likely to be affected than women. While the exact cause of Parkinson's is still largely unknown, multiple contributing factors have been identified.

The primary symptoms of Parkinson’s include tremors, bradykinesia (slowness of movement), decreased facial expression and speech, rigidity, dyskinesia (involuntary movements), festination (short rapid steps), freezing, small handwriting, shuffling gait or soft speech. Other common symptoms include loss of smell, constipation, depression, sleep disruption, and cognitive changes.

Physical therapy is a great way to help people with Parkinson's Disease enhance their mobility, quality of life, and independence. Living with Parkinson's Disease can be a difficult journey for the patient, family, and caregivers. Physical therapy is a great resource for people who need help increasing strength and function. At FYZICAL, we have neurological programs designed to help patients gain independence and tackle new opportunities. With the right support system, it is possible to manage the symptoms of Parkinson’s and live a healthy and fulfilling life. Hear From our Patients!
Meet Theresa from South Fort Myers, FL

Theresa is 76 years old and has Parkinson's Disease. She felt like she was losing control of her balance. After her most recent fall, she was in a lot of pain and very afraid of falling again. Theresa read about FYZICAL and thought it would be perfect for rebuilding her confidence and moving on!

Theresa thoroughly enjoyed her FYZICAL experience because of the personal attention she received, tailored programs, and in-depth explanations. The staff were very encouraging and helped make the program enjoyable. Theresa now has a newfound motivation to stay fit and the confidence to walk without assistance!

The Difference Between Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy

Occupational therapy and physical therapy are two distinct healthcare fields that share some similarities, but also have several significant differences. While both occupational and physical therapists use a variety of techniques to help people improve their quality of life, they approach the challenge from different angles. Occupational therapists focus on helping patients develop skills for daily living, while physical therapists emphasize restoring movement capabilities.

The goal of occupational therapy is to enable individuals to participate in meaningful and important activities by improving functional abilities through therapeutic interventions. This includes helping them learn how to perform tasks more easily or with less fatigue, using adaptive equipment when needed, providing strategies for managing pain or other conditions that may limit activity levels, and assisting with changes in the environment so activities can be completed safely.
