FAQ

FAQ

Do I need a doctor’s referral for physical therapy in Pennsylvania?

Pennsylvania allows direct access to physical therapy, meaning many patients can start care without a physician referral. Some insurance (such as Medicare) plans may require one, and our team at FYZICAL Fairless Hills is happy to help verify your coverage. Learn more about Direct Access here.

What insurance do you accept?

We accept Medicare, Medicaid and most major commercial insurers including Aetna, Blue Cross / Blue Shield, Keystone 65, United HealthCare and others. Please call us at 267-874-6000 with your plan details from your insurance card and we can verify what your plan covers.

Does Medicare cover balance and dizziness therapy?

Yes. Medicare typically covers medically necessary physical therapy, including balance therapy, fall prevention, and vestibular (dizziness) rehabilitation, when provided by a licensed physical therapist. Note Medicare does require a doctor’s script.

What causes balance problems as we age?

Balance problems as we age are often caused by a combination of changes in the body and nervous system. These may include reduced strength and flexibility, slower reflexes, changes in vision, and decline in the inner ear (vestibular system), which plays a key role in balance. Medical conditions, medications, nerve damage, and reduced activity levels can also contribute. Because balance relies on multiple systems working together, even small changes over time can increase the risk of unsteadiness and falls.

Can physical therapy help prevent falls?

Physical therapy focuses on improving strength, balance, coordination, and confidence. Which are all key factors in reducing fall risk and maintaining independence. Peer-reviewed studies have shown PT can reduce the risk of falling by ~25%. (See Source here.) Not only does PT reduce the risk of falls but also reduces the risk of fractures in case a fall does occur.

What is vestibular physical therapy?

Vestibular physical therapy is a specialized form of physical therapy designed to treat dizziness, vertigo, balance problems, and unsteadiness caused by issues with the inner ear. It uses targeted exercises and hands-on techniques to improve balance, reduce dizziness, stabilize vision during movement, and lower fall risk. Treatment at FYZICAL Fairless Hills is individualized and may include balance training, eye–head coordination exercises, motion sensitivity exercises, and specific maneuvers for conditions like BPPV, helping patients return to daily activities with greater confidence and stability

How do I know if I’m at risk of falling?

You may be at risk for falling if you’ve noticed changes in your balance, strength, or confidence with movement. Common warning signs include feeling unsteady when walking, needing to hold onto furniture or walls, dizziness, difficulty standing on one leg, slower reaction time, or fear of falling. A recent fall, even without injury, is also a strong indicator of increased risk. Because balance can decline gradually, many people don’t realize they’re at risk until a fall occurs. A balance screening can help identify fall risks early.

What should I expect at my first visit?

Your first visit will be a one-on-one evaluation (typically 1 hour) with a licensed physical therapist. Your physical therapist will evaluate your balance, gait, and fall‑risk. They will provide a clear explanation of findings and create a personalized plan focused on safety, balance, and daily activities. Each of your following appointments will be approximately 40 minutes.

Do you treat patients from Levittown and surrounding areas?

Yes. FYZICAL Fairless Hills proudly serves patients from Fairless Hills, Levittown, Morrisville, Yardley, and all Lower Bucks County.

What is the difference between dizziness, vertigo, and vestibular disorders?

These terms are related but describe different things.
Dizziness is a general term for feeling lightheaded, unsteady, or off-balance - it has many possible causes including low blood pressure, dehydration, medication side effects, or inner ear problems.
Vertigo is a specific type of dizziness where you feel like you or the room is spinning, and it is most often caused by a problem in the inner ear.
Vestibular disorders refer to conditions affecting the vestibular system - the structures of the inner ear and brain that control balance and spatial orientation. BPPV, vestibular neuritis, and Meniere's disease are common examples.
In short: dizziness is the symptom you feel, vertigo is one specific form of dizziness, and a vestibular disorder is often what's causing it. The good news is that all three respond well to specialized physical therapy, and our team at FYZICAL Fairless Hills evaluates and treats each of these conditions every day.

What is BPPV and how is it treated?

BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo) is the most common cause of vertigo. It occurs when tiny calcium crystals in the inner ear become dislodged and move into one of the semicircular canals, where they don't belong. This sends false signals to the brain about head movement, triggering brief but intense episodes of spinning - usually when you turn your head, look up, roll over in bed, or change positions. The good news is that BPPV is one of the most treatable conditions we see. Treatment involves specific repositioning maneuvers performed by your physical therapist to guide the displaced crystals back to their correct location. Most patients experience significant improvement in just one to three visits.

How long does a typical course of physical therapy last?

It depends on your condition, its severity, and your individual goals. Many patients see meaningful progress within 4 to 8 visits, while more complex or long-standing conditions may require 8 to 12 visits or more. Some conditions, like BPPV, can be resolved in as few as one to three sessions. During your first visit, your physical therapist will evaluate your condition and give you a clear idea of what to expect. We focus on getting you better as efficiently as possible - not keeping you in therapy longer than you need to be.

What is the Safety Overhead Support system?

Our Safety Overhead Support (SOS) system is a ceiling-mounted harness that supports patients during balance and gait training. It allows us to challenge your balance safely - pushing your limits without the risk of a fall. This is especially important for patients who are anxious about falling or who have significant balance deficits. The harness gives both the patient and therapist confidence to work at a higher intensity, which leads to better outcomes. Not every physical therapy clinic has this equipment, and it's one of the things that sets FYZICAL Fairless Hills apart.

Can I do physical therapy after a hip or knee replacement?

Absolutely. Physical therapy is a critical part of recovery after joint replacement surgery. PT helps restore range of motion, strength, balance, and confidence so you can return to daily activities like walking, climbing stairs, and getting in and out of a car. Many surgeons recommend starting PT within days of surgery. At FYZICAL Fairless Hills, every session is one-on-one with a licensed physical therapist, so your treatment plan is tailored specifically to your surgical protocol and recovery timeline.

Do I need to do exercises at home between visits?

Yes - and they matter. Your home exercise program is an important extension of what we do together in the clinic. Patients who are consistent with their home exercises typically recover faster and maintain their gains longer. Your physical therapist will give you a specific set of exercises designed for your condition and ability level, and will progress them as you improve. The exercises are straightforward and usually take about 15 to 20 minutes. We'll make sure you feel confident performing them before you leave the clinic.

What should I do if I feel dizzy or off-balance right now?

First, sit or lie down in a safe place until the sensation passes - do not try to "push through" dizziness, as this increases your fall risk. Avoid sudden head movements and stay hydrated. If your dizziness is accompanied by a severe headache, difficulty speaking, chest pain, numbness, or loss of consciousness, call 911 - these may be signs of a medical emergency. If you are experiencing recurring dizziness, vertigo, or unsteadiness that is not an emergency, call us at 267-874-6000 to schedule an evaluation. Many causes of dizziness and imbalance are highly treatable, and the sooner you're evaluated, the sooner you can start feeling better.

Do you only treat balance conditions?

Not at all. While FYZICAL Fairless Hills is known for our specialized balance, vestibular, and dizziness programs, we treat a wide range of conditions. Our services include orthopedic rehabilitation for joint pain, post-surgical recovery, back and neck pain, and sports injuries, as well as neurological rehabilitation for conditions affecting movement and coordination. We also treat patients recovering from auto and work-related injuries. Whether you're dealing with a knee replacement, chronic back pain, a concussion, or a balance disorder, our licensed physical therapists provide individualized, one-on-one care tailored to your specific condition and goals. Think of us as a full-service physical therapy clinic with a specialty in balance - not a balance-only clinic.
