Spring Into Action: Prioritizing Your Physical Health This Season

April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month, a time to shine a light on this neurological condition that affects movement, balance, and coordination. Parkinson’s disease occurs when brain neurons change and produce less dopamine, a chemical messenger. This leads to symptoms like tremors, stiffness, slower and more difficult movements, and unsteadiness. 

Physical therapy plays a crucial role in managing symptoms by helping individuals improve mobility, balance, and overall function to maintain independence and quality of life.

  • Take short, frequent walks: Even a 5- to 10-minute walk a few times a day can help improve circulation and boost your mood. If walking feels challenging, start by marching in place or using a sturdy chair for support.

  • Practice balance exercises: Simple activities like standing on one foot while brushing your teeth, walking heel-to-toe down a hallway, or gently shifting weight from side to side can enhance stability and confidence.

  • Stretch regularly: Keeping muscles flexible helps prevent stiffness and discomfort. Try gentle seated stretches for the back and legs, or reach overhead and take a deep breath.

  • Go from sitting to standing a few times in a row. It’s like a sneaky squat! Move slowly to use gravity as resistance and build strength. 

  • Take the stairs: Stair climbing supports mobility, strength, and cardiovascular endurance. Pace yourself, hold the rail for balance if needed, and take rest breaks as necessary.

  • Use movement reminders: Set a timer to stand up and stretch every hour, or place a sticky note by your chair as a cue to change positions regularly. Even small posture adjustments throughout the day can make a difference.

  • Engage in activities you enjoy: Movement doesn’t have to feel like exercise! Dance to your favorite song, do a little gardening, or practice tai chi—whatever gets you going and feels good for your body.
