Movement is Medicine 

Since the end of March, to protect against the spread and possible exposure to COVID-19, many have changed their normal life and activity levels.  These changes have not just affected the daily grind of going to work or even the weekly tasks of grocery shopping or monthly respite of going to pamper oneself at the salon; these changes have affected the very activities that helped maintain physical, mental and spiritual health. While the effects on families, children and working adults have been immense; the effect on retirees and elders has been even greater, often devastating.  

Since our world has been placed on "hold", the door has been left open to catch a new phenomenon, I have named:

"Quarantine Deconditioning".  

Deconditioning in plain english is the decrease in strength, flexibility, mobility and/or the ability to do the things needed for living safely and independently.  Deconditioning amplifies or worsens areas that are already weak.  

1. Social Distancing could also mean Social isolation which leads to depression, difficulty sleeping and changes in activity and appetite.

2. Deterioration of muscle strength with decreased mobility and safety.

3. Decreased flexibility producing increased pain levels and decreased mobility.

4. Neuromuscular dysfunction with decreased stability and balance. 

5. Decreased cardiovascular function with decreased endurance, increased distal swelling. 

6. Decreased pulmonary function with increased chance of pneumonia and shortness of breath with and without activity. 

That is the bad news. Here is the good news....
