March is Brain Injury Awareness Month
This month we want to work to bring awareness to brain injuries, specifically concussions and what Fyzical can do to help. You can't always prevent concussions, however you can take safety measures to reduce the risk of a brain injury. Did you know falls are the leading cause of concussions? This is part of why we are so passionate about balance therapy!
Concussion Facts:
- A concussion is a form of a mild brain injury
- Signs of a concussion are not always obvious
- Concussions do not always cause loss of consciousness
- Most people with a concussion recover quickly and fully
- Rest is very important after a concussion because it helps the brain heal
- Concussions, even mild, should ALWAYS be evaluated by a doctor
So what does this mean for you?
How can physical therapy help if you have sustained a concussion? Rest and proper recovery are very important after a brain injury. Your physical therapist can help you with a recovery program that will get you back on your feet in a safe and healthy way. They can help restore your strength and endurance when the right time comes without making your concussion symptoms worse. After a concussion, you may experience dizziness and balance issues. This should be addressed with a physical therapist to protect yourself from any potential falls that could result in another concussion. PT’s can also help to reduce headaches you may experience after a concussion. Treatment may include stretches, strength and motion exercises, eye movements, and hands on techniques. Physical therapy after a concussion will help you return to your normal activities and regular exercise in the safest way possible. Brain injuries, even minor concussions, should be taken seriously and your recovery is very important for your brain function.
