Common Conditions we see and treat in Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy

When many people think of physical therapy, they first think of joint pain therapy after an injury or surgery. We are fortunate to grow in our application, and over the last few years, have developed research-based interventions for many pelvic conditions. The following are many of the conditions that we treat with Pelvic floor physical therapy.

▪ Stress urinary incontinence: Probably the most common condition that we see. Patients with this condition will report they feel the sensation of leaking of urine or bowel with laughing, coughing, sneezing, lifting, or bending. Very common with certain conditions, especially after pregnancy and childbirth.

▪ Urge urinary incontinence: Do you remember the commercial for the medication where the person knew where every restroom was located in every location they went to? Did you identify with this commercial? You may have UUI. Patients with this condition tell me they will have a sudden urge to urinate even if only a small amount comes out and may often leak urine due to the urge.

▪ Mixed urinary incontinence: Patients with this condition report symptoms consistent with stress and urge urinary incontinence.

▪ Pelvic pain: Patients with this condition will tell me that they have pain when having a bowel movement or during other activities. Occasionally pain will be constant and may be referred to another body area (a lot of people don't know this!).

If you have any of these conditions, give us a call to discuss if you might benefit from pelvic floor physical therapy.
