What is Physical Therapy?

Physical therapy is care that aims to ease or eliminate pain. It also helps you function and move better. Treatments can range in duration depending on the clinic, physical therapist, and state you live in. The type of physical therapy you receive is also dependent upon the reason you are receiving this care.

The profession of physical therapy was first developed in the early 1900s as the Physical Therapists helped individuals recover from polio. It was also first used to rehabilitate soldiers returning from WWI. Prior to this, it was thought to have been practiced among the Romans. At this time, it was not called physical therapy, but physical therapy techniques were used, such as: massage, manual therapy, and hydrotherapy.

Beyond the degree and licensing required by law, we certify our physical therapists to meet the highest standards in the industry. Only then can they provide you with service. A core requirement for all our therapists is a loving, caring and helpful personality. At Fyzical in Lubbock, you’ll experience and individualized, supportive approach to physical therapy. One that uses hands on techniques and tailor made exercise programs delivered by expertly trained and licensed Physical Therapists who work one-on-one with you during your therapy sessions. We not only practice physical therapy but we live and breathe it, which results in high patient satisfaction.

When do you need Physical Therapy?

Physical therapy for surgery is used in two instances:

  • Pre-op PT
    • Many times, surgeons order physical therapy for patients prior to their surgery date. This allows for stronger ligaments, tendons, muscles, structure, etc. So, what’s the purpose of strengthening these structures? Not only has this proven to improve and speed up the healing process after surgery, but it allows for stabilization and prevention of further injury up to the patients surgery date.
  • Post-op PT
    • Post- op physical therapy is a more common term. The duration of your treatment is dependent upon your surgeon and physical therapist. Typically, the average amount of treatment time is 2-3x/week for 6-8 weeks.
  • Physical therapy for surgery is focused on getting your range of motion back as well as decreasing pain and inflammation.
  • No one likes injuries. Whether it be a concussion, sprained ankle, tennis elbow, muscle tear, or any other range of injuries, physical therapy can help. Give us a call at 806-785-7900 to set up an appointment or reach us here.
  • Physical Therapy at Fyzical Therapy and Balance Centers – Lubbock can also offer maintenance. We take a holistic approach to healing and maintaining health in the body. One of those ways is through our DBC machines or maintenance therapy. Our DBC machines are great for long term treatment of the back. Ask about how you can get set up on this, or what route you need for the best personal care for your needs.
  • Just like in our name, we value independence. This can be achieved in a lot of different ways, but we like to give everyone their independence back by focusing on balance. There are a handful of different treatments for balance. This all depends on the type of issue you are having: vertigo, BPPV, dizziness, prescription balance issues, etc.
  • Among the many things we treat, pelvic health is one of them. Our body all works together to perform at our best. When one issue occurs, this creates a domino effect and can cause issues in other areas. Urinary Incontinence, if left untreated, can cause UTI’s which can then lead to balance problems, delirium, and worse, especially in those 65 and older. It can also be another factor that takes away independence. We focus on a broad range of pelvic health treatments, but if you ever find yourself in need, please give us a call at 806-785-7900.
  • Physical therapy can also be used for pain management. It’s used as a treatment to strengthen our muscles and provide stability in our joints. This decreases your chances of injury. It can also decrease inflammation and swelling that contributes to pain. During your treatment, if deemed necessary by your physical therapist and your wants, modalities can be used. Modalities include therapeutic moist heat, compression, therapeutic ice, e-stim units, etc.

How do you get Physical Therapy?

In the state of Texas, we are able to see you as self pay, billing through insurance, and Direct Access. Direct Access is offered to all patients that DO NOT have Medicare. Through Direct Access, we are able to treat you for ten consecutive business days, without a referral from your doctor. During those ten days, we can still bill your insurance or collect as self-pay. If treatment is needed past those 10 days, we will require a referral from your physician to continue treatment. After receiving treatment through Direct Access for that particular region, we will not be able to treat that region under direct access again.

A referral or order from you physician is needed to seek treatment for physical therapy past 10 consecutive days. This is as simple as going to your PCP and asking for their signature for treatment. An order needs their signature, date order is signed, and patient’s name. Additional information may be asked, but it can be received prior to the start of treatment and is dependent upon the laws in that state.

Typically, treatment with a physical therapist is 2-3x/ week for 4-6weeks. This can range depending on the severity of the injury, or what the providers order states. This can also be limited based on what your insurance states is covered in your premium.

Whats included in my treatment?

  • You may hear us refer to your first appointment as your initial evaluation. This session is typically 60 minutes long. It allow us to get all your information in our systems. It also is a time for the treating Physical Therapist to ask questions pertaining to your injury, history, and supporting information to properly plan your specific treatment. Your follow up appointments will then be set after your initial evaluation as your physical therapist sees fit, along with the order your physician sent.
  • You will receive 1-on-1 treatment from your physical therapist. You may see a physical therapy assistant that works alongside your Physical Therapist as we try our best to fit your schedule.
  • Electrical Stimulation is used to block pain receptors in the body to allow for temporary pain relief as well as aid in reducing inflammation.
  • Therapeutic moist heat or cold ice packs are also used to treat pain and inflammation. What you receive is dependent upon your comfort levels and what your Physical Therapist discusses with you.
  • During your treatment, you may use several clinical items such as: therapy putty, shoulder pulley, CLX therapy bands, therapy gun, etc. All these items are available for purchasing through our front desk retail wall. For interest in purchasing, stop by our clinic (link of locations) or give us a call.
  • Depending on your reason for needing physical therapy, you may receive HEP or a Home Exercise Program provided by your PT or PTA. This is in addition to what you will receive during your treatment.
