Aquatic Therapy for Hypermobility

Benefits of Aquatic Therapy for Hypermobility

Hypermobility or “loose joints” can lead to widespread pain and disability. Exercise is critical to promote joint stability, but what if exercise only increases the pain? Aquatic therapy is a wonderful option for this population. The buoyancy of the water reduces the stress on the joints which leads to reduced pain, allowing you to do more in the water than you would be able to on land. The hydrostatic pressure helps reduce any swelling you may have and even helps improve your awareness of your joint position. The hydrostatic pressure can also aid with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) symptoms if you have this as well. While in the pool, you are constantly working against the resistance of the water which will increase muscular strength and endurance along with joint stability. Finally, the warmth of the water promotes relaxation of muscles and blood vessels, leading to improved blood flow and reduced pain.

At Fyzical Therapy and Balance Centers in Mechanicsburg we have a specialist that treats hypermobility conditions and aquatic therapy is incorporated into the program of those patients that can benefi from it. To make an appointment call 717-591-3000 or click here
