Cupping is a technique based on Eastern Medicine, but adopted by physical therapists to increase blood flow in order to improve tissue healing. Cupping is best used as a supplement to a targeted physical therapy treatment program. Cupping can be used as an alternative to other soft tissue mobilization techniques, and can be gentler than deep tissue massage.
Cupping works by lifting soft tissue up with plastic "cups" and a suction tool. This process helps to bring blood flow to the area and can help to relieve muscle tension. This technique can benefit many conditions but we have seen the most success with low back pain, shoulder and knee pain as well as plantar fascitis. At Fyzical Mechanicsburg, Jared Hunt, DPT is trained to utilize cupping to help his patients throughout their rehabilitation.
