Prehab

What is Prehab?

Prehab can be defined as physical therapy that prepares you for surgery to optimize outcomes. Findings show that starting prehab six weeks before surgery had the greatest impact on results after surgery. There are many benefits for preparing for your surgery, such as:

  • Prehab helps you understand the exercises, goals, and typical post-surgical procedure.
    • This will help reduce anxiety and fear; recovery will be easier because of the improvements in strength and flexibility prior to surgery. Your confidence will improve.
  • You will have improved muscle memory for post-operative exercises. This will help you progress quicker through the exercises and get out of pain sooner!
  • As healthcare costs are continuing to rise, there have been ways to fast track your stays in the hospital. Small cohorts of prehab with your physical therapist can help reduce the amount of time spent in the hospital, thus saving money in healthcare costs.
  • We can help you practice using assistive devices for safe and efficient walking. Practicing will help you get up and move quicker after surgery.
  • Receiving prehab treatment allows the therapist to get to know you better and develop a holistic plan of care tailored to your specific situation and goals. This helps you get back to doing what you love faster and with better outcomes.
