LSVT® BIG For Parkinson's Disease

Over time, Parkinson's Disease (PD) causes movements to become slower and smaller. Parkinson's Disease also effects posture, coordination and balance. Changes like these can cause speed, safety with common tasks and confidence to dwindle.

Typically, symptoms develop a slow pace over years. This disease is diverse, meaning these symptoms can progress differently from one person to another. People with Parkinson's Disease may experience:

  • Limb rigidity
  • Tremor, mainly at rest and described as pill rolling tremor in hands. Other forms of tremor are possible
  • Gait and balance problems
  • Bradykinesia

The cause of Parkinson's Diseases is widely unknown. There is no cure, however, treatment options can vary. Some treatment options include: physical therapy, surgery and medications. Complications from Parkinson's Disease is the number 14th cause of death in the United States. The disease itself is not fatal, but complications of the disease can become fatal.

LSVT® BIG can help! LSVT BIG is standardized and will provide Parkinson’s patients with improvements in daily activities to  improve their quality of life by implementing life long habits. After treatment, research shows improved ratings on tests of motor functioning in people with PD using LSVT Big. Research also shows:

  • Improvements in daily activity, such as bed mobility
  • Improved motor function
  • Improved balance
  • Faster walking with bigger steps
  • Increased trunk rotation

Research suggests that you should not wait until you experience an impairment of function, a disability, or loss of balance to start this program.

LSVT® BIG starts with 16 sessions for four consecutive days a week for four weeks. There are 16 sessions, 1 hour long each.  LSVT® BIG focuses on repettive and high amplitude motions performed with maximal effort.  These movements help produce more functional and bigger  movements for everyday activities. Research shows that LSVT BIG increases quality of life, may slow motor deterioration, and POSSIBLY slows disease progression.
