What is Multiple Sceloris and how is it treated?

Multiple Sceloris (MS) involves an abnormal response of the body's immune system that is directed against the central nervous system. Nearly 1 million people over the age of 18 live with MS. If you don't have a physical therapist on your treatment team, it might be time to add one. The PTs at FYZICAL Oklahoma City are suited to treat several MS symptoms:

Pain:

If you are living with Pain, unfortunately, that is par for the course. Most Americans experience low back pain at some point in their lives and for those living with MS, it can be even worse. Your pain makes it harder to complete your activities of daily living. Pain leaves you uncomfortable and frustrated. But you don't want to take another pill, because it just leaves you with some other side effect. You want an all-natural solution and you can find it with physical therapy.

Physical therapists are the experts in movement. It is the goal of FYZICAL's therapists to make sure we get you moving to the best of your ability and that requires an understanding of your condition and how it is impacting the things you do daily.

Fatigue:

For many with MS, living with fatigue is just another reminder of the challenges you face. But the reality is movement is medicine. If you are sitting around because of the pain, you may be doing more harm. It reduces the movement of your natural inflammation-fighting cells and while you may not feel worse in the short term unless you had a particular injury, you aren't likely to get better sitting around.

Your physical therapist should be able to push you to the point at which you benefit from therapy and build your stamina without limiting your ability to enjoy the rest of your day. You will work during physical therapy, but it's the kind of work where you can see results and achieve a major goal.

Weakness:

If you are in pain, you may have noticed that one of the other issues with sitting and resting too long is that your muscles begin to atrophy; they get smaller, they get weaker.

Your Physical Therapist will work with you to set achievable short-, middle-, and long-term goals. This will help them determine where you need the most strength to achieve those goals. If you want to pick up your groceries, it makes more sense to focus on your arm and shoulder, if you want to walk around the block and over gravel, we have to make sure you are physically strong enough and your sensory systems are strong enough.

Imbalance and increased risk of falling:

Living with MS, you already have or eventually will deal with the imbalance. It is one of the core symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis. Imbalance robs you of your friends and family because it is more difficult to get around, falls are a constant concern, and traveling in unfamiliar places can make it even worse.

But living with MS doesn't mean you are done living. You want a solution that works with your body to find a solution that can meet you where you are today and help you progress tomorrow and beyond.

FYZICAL’s Physical Therapists specialize in the treatment of imbalance. We understand that improved balance means improved independence. When you come to see us for the treatment of imbalance due to MS, we need to examine your whole balance system. Not just your strength and physical aspects of balance, but the sensory deficits that are making your balance worse.

Your sensory assessment will consist of the balance rehabilitation PT examining your Visual, Vestibular, and Somatosensory systems.

Poor Coordination:

Poor coordination may have been one of the first clues to your MS. Or maybe you have always thought of yourself as clumsy or a butterfingers. The reality is, poor coordination goes beyond what we typically think of. Coordination is not just your ability to put movements together fluidly, but your ability to plan those movements based on the sensory input your body is providing you. (Understanding sensory deficits goes beyond just your balance.)

Poor coordination may be a component of your poor balance. So, when you receive balance rehabilitation as a treatment of your MS symptoms, it would be addressed in the course of balance rehabilitation. But poor coordination can also refer to motor planning of the arms and hands (as well as eyes and speech).  A Physical Therapist can work with you to address the deficits of motor planning and support you with adaptive strategies, tools, or techniques to maintain or improve your independence.

The PTs at FYZICAL Oklahoma City love working with our patients with MS. The gains we can achieve together make the challenges and the hard work worth it.
