Concussion Protocol

When thinking of concussions, often the first image that comes to mind is the traditional athlete; the football player who has taken one too many hits or the softball player struggling to slide into home plate. What is often misunderstood is the concussion protocol in the elderly population, as they too are particularly susceptible to concussion. With the increasing age of the population and an associated increased rate of falls in the elderly, concussion protocol for this population becomes increasingly important. At FYZICAL therapy and balance centers, we are taking a comprehensive and holistic approach to concussion management for both the younger and older athletes.

Compromise of the balance and vestibular systems composes a large component of post concussive symptoms. Through our aggregate of balance and vestibular tests and measures at FYZICAL, we are able to dissect and intricately treat these symptoms for a safer and faster return to play, whatever that may be for each individual. The subsequent treatment utilizes a litany of vestibular and balance tools to best address the patients limitations. The use of frenzel lenses to assess oculomotor movement is a cornerstone of the concussion protocol at FYZICAL. In addition, virtual reality and our cutting edge patient safety harness system ensures that the Physical Therapists and staff are able to best address balance deficits and concerns in a safe and secure environment. Imbalance secondary to concussion can be intimidating for patients, so ensuring that the patient feels safe and confident throughout treatment is essential to optimal patient participation in care.

Just like each patient, each concussion is different. Each person and situation presents with their own unique signs, symptoms and limitations post-concussion. Here at FYZICAL we are aiming to most accurately and efficiently diagnose and treat these symptoms to allow for the patient to return to loving their life.
