Physical Therapy's Pivotal Role in Stroke Rehabilitation

A stroke, or a cerebral vascular accident, occurs when a blood vessel in the brain is blocked or ruptures. When blood flow to your brain halts, so does the oxygen and nutrition which your brain needs in order to properly function. There are two major types of strokes:

  • Ischemic Stroke: This type of stroke is the most common and is caused by an artery blockage, which eliminates blood flow to the brain. Blood clots are typically the main cause of an ischemic stroke.
  • Hemorrhagic Stroke: This type of stroke is caused by a blood vessel rupture or leak due to a weakened blood vessel. The brain will experience pressure due to the rupture or leak which will cause injury. Common causes of a hemorrhagic stroke can occur from an aneurysm or elevated blood pressure.

It is important to start physical therapy quickly after a stroke; a customized therapy program can assist you with returning to normal activities. Therapy will begin with a comprehensive assessment of your health history and current condition. Once this is complete, your physical therapist will work with you on exercises to improve your balance, movement ability, utilizing movement devices, strength training and relearning how to fully use your body. Some of these techniques include task-oriented training, strength training, balance therapy, electrical stimulation, biofeedback, and/or virtual reality.

Spring Cleaning Safety Tips

With the spring weather rolling in, spring cleaning in and around your home may be on your mind! Follow the cleaning safety tips below to help ensure you don't injure yourself while tidying up:

  • Wear appropriate clothing: Choose comfortable and breathable materials that allow for easy movements. Don't wear loose fitting clothes that could get caught on something.
  • Use proper lifting techniques: Use your legs, not your back, while lifting! Bend your knees and keep the object close to your body when lifting.
  • Prevent slips and falls: Clean up any spills immediately to prevent potential falls. Wear non-slip shoes and place non-slip mats in high-risk areas.
  • Take breaks: Pace yourself and take frequent breaks to hydrate to help avoid overexertion.

Benefits of our Pelvic Health & Wellness Program

The pelvic floor consists of skin, muscles, ligaments, nerves, connective tissues, blood vessels, and organs in your pelvis. Pelvic therapy can help men and women with bladder control problems, bowel control problems, and pelvic pain problems. Additionally, pelvic therapy can help women who are currently pregnant or in postpartum with pelvic floor muscle weakness, cesarian section complications, pelvic girdle and back pain, and more.

Pelvic health is crucial to your overall health. Having a healthy pelvic floor ensures that you have good bladder and bowel control and allows you to live an active lifestyle without worrying about uncomfortable and embarrassing symptoms. Declutter Your Space

Did you know that having a cluttered, untidy home can lead to unnecessary stress? If you need some inspiration on where to start, we have a few ideas! First, create a habit of decluttering by setting a specific day each week to declutter. Throw out any junk mail and expired items and put away unnecessary things on the counter or out in the open. Go through your clothes and accessories and donate any lightly used items that haven't been worn in over 9 months.

Switch Your Morning Coffee to Tea

Switching up your morning coffee for tea not only supports a healthy heart but has a multitude of health benefits. Regular green tea drinkers may lower their "bad" cholesterol, and regular black tea drinkers may have a lower risk of developing heart disease. Tea is a great source of naturally occurring, heart-healthy flavonoids, and drinking it daily can benefit your heart.
