Pediatric Occupational Therapy

The pediatric occupational therapists at FYZICAL Skaneateles identify and treat difficulties that interfere with your child’s ability to perform functional daily living skills, academic skills, and activities with their peers.

What To Expect During Pediatric Occupational Therapy

Your pediatric occupational therapist will evaluate your child and develop an individualized treatment plan based on their needs. Evaluation includes a parent interview, standardized testing, informal assessment, and play-based interaction with your child to determine their current fine motor, visual perception, and sensory-motorabilities. Treatment sessions focus on developing the skills they need to grow into functional and independent adults, including fine motor skills, cognition, upper limb coordination, social skills, self-regulation, sensory processing, and activities of daily living.

Conditions Treated With Pediatric Occupational Therapy

Our pediatric occupational therapists are experts in treating a range of motor and sensory conditions, including:
  • Sensory processing challenges
  • Autism spectrum disorders
  • Congenital disorders, such as Down syndrome and cerebral palsy
  • Orthopedic conditions
  • Visual-motor/perceptual developmental delays
  • Generalized weakness
  • Feeding disorders
  • Handwriting delays
  • Picky eating

Benefits of Pediatric Occupational Therapy

Treatment Approaches

Behavioral Management Approach

At FYZICAL Skaneateles, our pediatric occupational therapists are expertly trained in social-emotional development and toddler behavior management. They are also certified in the treatment of anxiety in children and teens. Our therapists look at the social, emotional, and sensory aspects of behavior to help children and teens manage their emotions and assist with self-regulation from a whole-person perspective.

Sensory Processing

Our pediatric occupational therapists are also trained in recognizing when over-or under-stimulation triggers certain behaviors. They can then provide your child with strategies to overcome these sensory challenges, allowing your child to become more independent and functional in their daily life.

Feeding Therapy

Our pediatric occupational therapists also address the sensory aspect of feeding and work with children who have eating issues due to textures, behavior management, or other sensory factors, using a sequential oral sensory approach (SOS) to feeding, in combination with behavioral approaches, when needed.
