Vestibular Rehabilitation in South Sarasota

What is Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy?

Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT) is a type of physical therapy that treats dizziness, vertigo, and balance problems. VRT involves performing specific exercises that stimulate your vestibular system and train your brain to adapt to changes in your inner ear and visual fields.

Ultimately, this reduces your risk of falling and improves your quality of life. At FYZICAL® South Sarasota, our physical therapists perform a thorough assessment of your condition to develop an individualized treatment plan to manage your symptoms.

What Does Vestibular Rehabilitation Treat?

Vestibular rehabilitation treats numerous conditions, including:
  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
  • Dizziness associated with:
    • Concussions
    • Migraines
    • Musculoskeletal Balance Disorders
    • Neck-Related Dizziness
    • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
    • Vertigo
  • Inner Ear Issues, such as:
    • Labyrinthitis
    • Vestibular Neuritis
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • Parkinson’s Disease
VRT can also be beneficial for seniors who are at risk of falling.

The Basics of the Vestibular System

The vestibular system is the part of your nervous system that supports your balance and spatial orientation. Without it, we would be incapable of performing many basic tasks, such as standing, walking, and running.

Injuries, infections, tumors, and aging can interfere with the normal functioning of your vestibular system, causing symptoms like dizziness, hearing loss, tinnitus, and nausea. These symptoms can lead to an increased risk of falling.

What are the Main Points of the Vestibular System?

This system consists of two main components: the central vestibular system and the peripheral vestibular system.

Central Vestibular System

Your central vestibular system is located in your brainstem and cerebellum. It receives signals from your sensory systems, including the peripheral vestibular system, your proprioception, and your vision. The central system processes these signals and sends commands to your eyes and muscles to adjust your eye movements and posture.

Peripheral Vestibular System

Located in your inner ear, the peripheral system includes the semicircular canal, the utricle, and the saccule. These structures contain sensory cells (“cilia”) that detect movement and the position of your head.

What are the Goals of Vestibular Rehabilitation?

The goals of VRT include:
  • Improving your balance and stability
  • Reducing dizziness and vertigo
  • Improving mobility, confidence, and independence
  • Decreasing your risk of falls
  • Enhancing your quality of life
