Welcome to FYZICAL Southington's January Newsletter!

Happy New Year from our FYZICAL family! This month, we're sharing information on strength training, tips to help ease back pain, a staff feature, and some delicious recipes that are perfect for the colder weather!

Strength Training Can Help Better Your Health

Many New Year's Resolutions revolve around devoting more time and energy to our health and wellness. Strength training exercises can help you take your health and wellness to the next level by easing pain or discomfort while simultaneously strengthening the affected part(s) of your body.

At FYZICAL Southington, our physical therapists can help create a strength training program personalized to your needs and goals. Our team will evaluate your current fitness level and guide you toward a pain-free, stronger, and healthier lifestyle. Strength and flexibility are important factors in your health. Our muscles help us move and perform daily activities, aiding us in our circulatory and breathing systems. Performing strength training exercises can not only help ease joint or muscle pain but can also act as a guide for proper strength training exercises.

Strength training is normally the final step in our rehabilitation program because it assists with building muscle mass. This type of exercise can help you recover from an injury or a painful underlying condition while also strengthening your body to get back to your optimum physical performance. At FYZICAL Southington, our strength training programs will help you achieve your New Year's Resolutions by getting you back on track to living a happy and healthy lifestyle!

Meet our Team!

Dr. Brenna Kelley, PT, DPT from Bristol, CT

Brenna received her bachelor's degree in Health Sciences from the University of Hartford and her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of St. Augustine for Health Science.

Growing up, Brenna had frequent injuries as a soccer player, so she took an interest in physical therapy when she was a patient. She was inspired by the positive impact it had on her life and knew it was something she wanted to do to help others.

Brenna has always enjoyed working with people and it was important to her to stay physically active while helping people within her community.

Brenna was a former patient of FYZICAL Bristol and enjoyed the atmosphere, camaraderie and desire to help each patient achieve their personal goals. Now, as an employee of FYZICAL, Brenna enjoys the outpatient physical therapy population and has the ability to help many people in her community achieve their desired physical outcomes!

The Cause of Your Back Pain

In the United States, 80% of the population reports suffering from back pain. Incorporating small changes into our daily lives can help alleviate back pain and help us live a healthier life! The positions we are in while we sit, work, read, drive and even sleep can help eliminate or cause us further discomfort.

Here are some general tips to abide by, to help avoid or relieve back pain:

  • Think about the bowling ball challenge - For every inch that the ears are positioned in front of the shoulder, the head increases by 10 lbs.! Keeping your head in proper posture will help you avoid pain and discomfort.
  • Focus on your daily posture, especially at your workstation - Slouch, Overcorrect and Release.
  • Figure out what type of sleeper you are, supine or side-sleeper - Keeping the neck in a neutral position is crucial when sleeping. Also, ensure that you use the proper amount of pillows in the correct placement for your sleeping style.
