Welcome to FYZICAL Southington's February Newsletter!

February is American Heart Month! This month, read tips on how you can reach optimal sports performance and learn about how to maintain a healthy heart. Hear from one of our patients about their physical therapy journey after a hamstring injury. If you have a loved one who could benefit from the information below, please forward this newsletter to them.

Reach Your Optimal Sports Performance

Physical fitness and exercise are not limited to professional athletes alone. Everyone can take steps to reach their optimal sports performance through proper training, nutrition, and mindset. Whether you are a professional athlete or simply someone who enjoys staying active, optimizing your performance can help you achieve your goals and improve overall health and well-being.

Training plays a crucial role in improving sports performance. This includes both physical training and mental preparation with a structured training program that focuses on specific goals and objectives allowing for gradual progress and prevents the risk of injury. Additionally, proper training not only strengthens the body but also improves overall coordination, balance, and flexibility. This can greatly enhance an individual's athletic abilities and help them perform at their best.

There are many ways that you can reach optimal sports performance. This includes not only physical training and conditioning but also mental and emotional preparation. A physical therapist can help you reach your maximum potential and develop a training plan specifically for you. By having a consistent training routine, setting realistic goals, and maintaining a positive attitude, you can increase your abilities. Injuries do unfortunately occur, and if you get injured along the way, contact FYZICAL and we will help get you back to your sport or fitness activity as quickly as possible!

How to Maintain a Healthy Heart

Follow the tips below to encourage a lifestyle that supports a healthy heart:

  • Consume heart healthy foods. A heart healthy diet includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, and nuts. Limit your salty meats, processed foods, and fast foods consumption. Replace sweet snacks with fresh fruit.
  • Increase physical activity. If you are not active, start with a small amount of physical activity a few days each week. Slowly increase the duration and intensity of your workouts.
  • Have regular check-ups. Attend recommended check-ups with your primary care doctor. Maintain your heart health by having your blood pressure and blood sugar level checked frequently.
  • Limit or avoid alcohol consumption. Consuming alcohol is linked to certain diseases and health issues, including cardiovascular diseases. Protect your heart and limit or avoid alcohol consumption!

Hear From our Patients

"I began physical therapy to assist with my recovery for a strained hamstring. My physical therapist tailored each exercise so that I would be fully healthy to run a marathon relay. I had 5 weeks to get my hamstring healthy and we were able to reach that goal together! My physical therapist pushed me during our sessions and put together a great program that I was able to follow throughout my hectic schedule. They also taught me some great stretches that I will incorporate into my running routine. Before physical therapy, I felt defeated since this was my first serious injury. Now, I feel great and am ready to start training for running again!"
