Balance Therapy Program

If you are feeling dizzy, if you have experienced vertigo, fallen, or are feeling like your balance is off; you have come to the right place. FYZICAL Spanish Fork are leading specialists in balance and vestibular therapy. When you come to us you come to the best when it comes to balance.

Now, balance and gait (meaning the way you walk or take steps) problems can stem from a variety of conditions. There can be orthopedic (meaning the way your bones, joints, and muscles work) imbalances or weakness. There can also be neurological disorders - something going on with the wiring from the brain to the muscles. Or it could be something going on with the inner ear - which is in charge of keeping us upright. Additionally, conditions, such as arthritis, Meniere’s disease, peripheral neuropathy, and stroke, can also cause balance and gait disorders. At FYZICAL Spanish Fork, we know that balance is core to your wellness - I mean if you can’t stand up, or walk with out fear or if your world is spinning all of the time, how are you going to do the things you love. We want you to experience life at its fullest so our skilled team will identify and address the root cause of your imbalance to help you restore your physical stability and coordination while regaining your control and independence.

In addition to being annoying, poor balance or a faulty gait can lead to falls, and falling is a constant worry for seniors and others who have physical challenges. These worries are not unwarranted, because falls are the leading cause of injury-related deaths and serious health problems in the United States!

The Relationship Between Balance & Gait

As we work to improve your balance we will also work with you to improve your walking skills — technically known as your “gait” — usually these two things go hand in hand. At FYZICAL Spanish Fork we help you master these skills (balance and gait) to decrease your risk of injury while at the same time increasing your confidence and independence. To do so we will first work with your Neurological system - including your brain and nervous systems. Your neurological system controls both the voluntary and involuntary movements of your muscles and the sensory input and feedback from your eyes, ears, and skin. Your neurological system also helps to maintain your posture, coordination, and reflexes, which are crucial for balance and gait. We will then work with your musculoskeletal system - including your muscles, bones, and connective tissues. Your musculoskeletal system provides structure and support for your body and also allows for movement. Your musculoskeletal system also provides flexibility and stability for your joints, which are crucial for balance and gait. Finally, we will work with your sensory systems - including the visual (eyes), vestibular (inner ear), and proprioceptive (receptors in the muscles, ligaments, tendons, and joints) systems. Your sensory systems provide information about your body’s position and movement relative to your environment.
These systems need to be functioning together properly to provide you with optimal balance and normal gait.

Some of the tools and practices we use at FYZICAL Spanish Fork to work with your neurological, musculoskeletal, and sensory systems are a rigorous assessment and valuation program that will then result in a personalized balance and gait training program. Part of this program will include balance retraining and fall prevention preparation. Your program may also include manual therapy - hands on help from a qualified physical therapist, vestibular rehabilitation, and functional training.
