Typical Rehabilitation After a Stroke

Physical therapy can have a significantly positive impact on the recovery of those who have experienced a stroke. A physical therapist can help teach patients more about their condition while working through guided exercises designed to improve range of motion, increase overall strength, and help regain mobility. Engaging in a physical therapy program can also help reduce the likelihood of developing contractures, or the tightening of muscles, which can lead to permanent loss of function.

In addition to these benefits, patients can also learn techniques to improve balance, coordination, and posture, which will assist in everyday tasks such as standing, walking, and getting dressed. Most importantly, physical therapy can give a renewed sense of hope, confidence, and independence, ultimately improving their overall quality of life. Hear From our Patients!
Meet Kathy From Franklin, NC

In commemoration of Women's Health Month, we wanted to share a story from one of our patients in North Carolina!

Kathy is 77 years old and needed physical therapy to help build strength and improve her balance. After seeing how kind the therapists were to her mother, she knew that FYZICAL was the right place to go for her therapy. She really enjoyed the therapy sessions and how the programs were tailored to her. All of the physical therapists did their very best to help her with therapy, and the therapy worked! Kathy felt very low and weak before physical therapy. She now feels 100% better!

Could You Benefit From Prehabilitation?

Prehabilitation, or “prehab”, is an emerging concept in the physical therapy and sports medicine world. In physical therapy, prehabilitation is used as a rehabilitation program prior to surgery or injury.

For surgery, prehabilitation is based on the concept that patients with a higher functional capacity before surgery will better tolerate the surgery itself. Improved outcomes may also be a result of prehabilitation which could include decreased length of stay in the hospital, improved tolerance to exercise, improved quality of life, and a faster return to work.

In the athletic and strength and conditioning world, prehabilitation is used more as a means of injury prevention. Physical therapists can perform evaluations on individuals to see if they have specific movement dysfunctions, joint pattern issues, or various compensations. For more information on if prehabilitation is right for you, contact the FYZICAL nearest you!

Stay Active Throughout Your Week!

Bike or Walk to Work

If you live close to your job, try walking or riding your bike to work every day or a couple of times a week. This will not only help you get active and get outdoors, but this will also help to add some variety to your work week!

Take a Standing Break

Sitting for long periods of time can decrease blood flow to your brain and other parts of your body. Try using a standing desk at work. You can set an alarm for yourself on your phone as a reminder to stand every hour or two.

Plan Group Fitness Activities with Friends

Get social with your friends by doing something active and fun! This will help you to stay accountable with your physical activity. Motivate yourself and your friends with some healthy new activities to try next time you spend time together.
