Fight the Fall: Join FYZICAL This September for National Falls Prevention Awareness Month

September is National Falls Prevention Awareness Month — a time to shine a light on one of the most common and serious health risks facing older adults: falls. At FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Centers, we’re proud to support the Fight the Fall campaign, raising awareness and providing real solutions to help our community stay safe, independent, and on their feet.

The Facts About Falls

  • 1 in 4 adults aged 65 and older falls each year in the U.S.

  • Falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries among older adults.

  • Every 11 seconds, an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall-related injury.

  • Falls can lead to serious consequences like hip fractures, head trauma, or even long-term disability and loss of independence.

But here’s the good news: most falls are preventable — and that’s where we come in.

What Increases Your Risk of Falling?

Several factors can raise your risk of falling, including:

  • Balance or gait problems

  • Muscle weakness or joint instability

  • Dizziness or vertigo

  • Vision impairments

  • Medications that cause drowsiness, dizziness, or low blood pressure

  • Environmental hazards like loose rugs, uneven surfaces, or poor lighting

  • History of prior falls, which increases the risk of future falls

If any of these sound familiar, it may be time for a fall risk assessment.

Tips to Help Reduce Your Risk

You can take steps right now to protect yourself or a loved one from falling:

  1. Stay physically active – Focus on strength, flexibility, and balance exercises.

  2. Review your medications – Ask your doctor or pharmacist to evaluate side effects.

  3. Eliminate tripping hazards – Remove clutter, install grab bars, and improve lighting.

  4. Wear proper footwear – Choose supportive shoes with non-slip soles.

  5. Have regular eye exams – Keep your vision sharp with updated prescriptions.

  6. Stay hydrated and monitor blood pressure – Low pressure or dehydration can cause dizziness.
