FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The quick answer is no; you do not need a referral from your physician for a fall risk screening. We are able to speak with you to gain a better understanding of your condition. However, many insurance providers, including Medicare, require a referral and/or a plan of care from your physician to provide physical therapy treatment. We can help! We will be able to facilitate the process and streamline acquiring a physician referral.

Most insurance plans, including Medicare, workers' compensation, and private insurers, pay for physical therapy services. Our team will work with you to understand your plan and what to expect at each appointment.

Each year, millions of older adults fall. Falling once doubles your chances of falling again. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides the following statistics on falls:

  • Falls can be prevented
  • Falls are the leading cause of injury for adults ages 65 and older
  • Each year, 3 million older adults are treated in emergency departments for fall-related injuries
  • Each year, about 1 million older adults are hospitalized because of a fall injury
  • Each year, over 300,000 older adults are hospitalized for hip fractures
  • Falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries (TBI)
  • Medical costs for falls surpassed $50 billion. Medicare and Medicaid shouldered 75% of these costs

If you or someone you know suffers from imbalance, keep in mind that early intervention is key. Falling is not an inevitable result of aging, and there are steps you can take to improve your balance and decrease your chances of falling.
