At FYZICAL Durham you’ll experience an individualized, supportive approach to physical therapy. One that uses hands on techniques and tailor made exercise programs delivered by expertly trained and licensed Physical Therapists who work one-on-one with you during your therapy sessions. Yonica graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1993 with a BS in Physical Therapy. After a brief stint in acute care and home health, she worked in outpatient orthopedics from 1994 through 2002.  In 2001, Yonica was credentialed in the McKenzie method of Spine Care (www.mckenziemdt.org). 

In 2003, Yonica opened Physical Therapy of North Carolina, now FYZICAL Durham, with a vision of developing a clinic where patients are treated in an environment of comfort and great respect, with an obvious commitment to provide unprecedented clinical care. 

Yonica completed her transitional Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree from the University of North Carolina in May 2009.  She continues to expand her knowledge through regular continuing education, and demonstrates her support and promotion of the PT profession through participation in the NCPTA, APTA, fundraising efforts to support the professional development of PT students at UNC, community outreach including participation in Senior Health Support of the Triangle, committee member for Project Access of Durham County, and educational speaking engagements for local organizations.

Melissa Horton

Melissa Horton
PT

Melissa joined FYZICAL Durham in September 2014, bringing 31 years of diverse clinical experience and regionally recognized expertise in the evaluation and treatment of dizziness and balance disorders. Melissa is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she earned her BS degree in physical therapy in 1984. Her vast clinical experience includes acute care (neurology, critical care, oncology, and Women’s Health), inpatient neurological rehabilitation, outpatient orthopedic and neurological rehabilitation, and in-home therapy.

In 1999, 2004, and 2007 she completed advanced competencies and credentialing in vestibular rehabilitation and vestibular test interpretation. In 2002, Melissa opened Rex Balance Center which was the first specialized vestibular PT clinic in the region. From 2008 to 2011 she operated Carolina Balance and Rehabilitation Center.

Recognized for her clinical expertise in the treatment of dizziness and imbalance, Melissa has been a guest lecturer in the physical therapy program at East Carolina University and the physical therapy assistant program at Fayetteville Community College. Additionally, she has taught classes in vestibular rehabilitation and the evaluation and treatment of balance disorders to physical therapists across the state.

Melissa is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association. She served on the NCPTA Board of Directors in the early 1990s and is an APTA credentialed clinical instructor. She formerly served on clinical education advisory boards at Fayetteville Community College and Duke University. Melissa has published as a primary author and as a contributing author in journals including Physical Therapy and Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Melissa has participated in the NC Falls Prevention Coalition and in outreach programs to screen and educate seniors about falls risk.

Jorn Larsen

Jorn Larsen
PT

Jorn joined the FYZICAL-Durham team in April 2016. He is originally from Denmark, where he graduated from The Copenhagen School of Physical Therapy in 1988. Since moving to NC in the summer of 1992, Jorn has worked in acute hospital care, orthopedics, and home health. His extensive continuing education has been in various areas of orthopedics, including treatment of neck and back disorders according to the McKenzie approach, joint replacement therapy, and geriatrics. Jorn is also currently studying to expand his clinical expertise to include vestibular rehab. 

Rebecca Bliss

PT, DPT

Rebecca joined the Fyzical team in October of 2018. Rebecca received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance in 2007 from Florida State University. While at Florida State, she was a member of Dance Repertory Theatre before moving to New York City to perform with several small dance companies. Rebecca’s love for movement, and a passion for helping others led her to pursue a career in physical therapy, and she continued her education at Drexel University, where she completed her Doctorate of Physical Therapy in 2018.

Rebecca’s clinical interests include treatment of post-concussion syndrome, rehabilitation of lower extremity injuries with special focus on the hip and ankle, and a passion for rehabilitation of dancers where she is able to combine her professional experience and clinical expertise. Rebecca also enjoys working with patients who require gait and balance training including individuals with a neurological diagnosis such as Parkinson's, Multiple Sclerosis, or recovery after a stroke. Rebecca has earned her Senior Balance Retrainer Level II Certification and above all else loves the opportunity to work one on one with patients to help them achieve their goals.

In her spare time, Rebecca enjoys volunteering with NC Dance for Parkinson’s group, offering a series of dance classes for individuals with Parkinson’s through a partnership with the Parkinson’s Movement Initiative and American Dance Festival.

Tameka Alford

Tameka Alford
Billing Specialist and Office Manager

Tameka joined Fyzical Durham in March 2018.  She received her Associates in Accounting in 2008 from Strayer University. Tameka brings a wealth of billing knowledge as she has spent over 15 years in medical claims management.  She enjoys working with numbers and is a master at solving billing and revenue issues. Her knowledge of insurance also makes her a valuable resource for our patients and she is always willing and excited to assist them with questions regarding their coverage, billing issues, or general concerns regarding healthcare coverage. Tameka is a billing rock-star and simultaneously keeps day-to-day operations running smoothly in her role as Office Manager.

Ethan Clary

Ethan Clary
PT Technician

Ethan Joined Fyzical Durham in February 2018. He earned his BA in History with a double minor in Criminal Justice and Education. Ethan taught physical education for 3 years before taking anatomy and physiology at Miami Dade College where he found a passion and interest in the human body and how it works. His interest has led him to his current position as our PT Tech and he is currently taking prerequisite classes this year so that he can apply to PT school in 2019!

Garet Clemens

Garet Clemens
PTA

Garet joined Fyzical Durham in March 2018. Garet received his Physical Therapy Assistant Associate’s degree from Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, NY in 2017. He brings a passion for helping patients restore their independence in order to resume the activities that enable them to Love Their Lives! Garet experienced an injury himself that led him to pursue a career in physical therapy.  His understanding of the need for successful rehab makes him a compassionate and effective clinician.

Ashley joined Fyzical Durham in June 2018.  Ashley brings great customer service experience in the healthcare realm and she is eager to make every experience a great one whether you call our clinic or meet her face-to-face. Ashley’s enthusiasm and love of people are evident in all of her interactions, even as she manages a busy front desk environment.  Ashley will be the one who gets you started on your wonderful adventure of rehab with our elite Team!
