Vestibular Migraines

Woman, Face, Bullying, Stress, Shame

Migraines are typically characterized by bad headaches with sensitivity to light sensitivity (photophobia), sensitivity to sound (phonophobia), nausea or vomiting.

Vestibular migraines may occur with or without any headache pain, but typically happen after a long history of migraines (7+ years).  With vestibular migraines, there will be dizziness or vertigo (spinning sensations).

Like migraine headaches, many times there are triggers to vestibular migraines.  Food triggers may include MSG, aged cheese, processed meat, alcohol, fermented foods, and chocolate.  It can also be triggered by hormonal fluctuations, stress, sleep disturbance, or pressure changes.

If you suffer from vestibular migraines, the specialist to medically/pharmaceutically stabilize you is the neurologist.  The specialist to functionally stabilize you is the vestibular physical therapist.  The neurologist may suggest eating whole foods or take supplements, such as magnesium.  He also may suggest relaxation or physical exercise, lifestyle changes, etc.  The physical therapist will give you the tools on how to manage the vertigo, reduce the frequency and severity of symptoms, and address any other associated issues.  The PT will be your friend, your guide, and your coach.
