A Runner's Checklist: What Equipment to Select For Comfort, Safety, and Injury Prevention

Spring is here, which means warmer weather is coming soon. Warmer weather may welcome the opportunity of a run free of snow and ice, but it serves as a reminder that no matter the season, it’s important to have comfortable and safe equipment that can help you prevent injuries.

What running equipment should you select for comfort, safety, and injury prevention?

  • A good pair (or two) of running shoes.

What if you don't have a good pair of running shoes? What makes a pair of running shoes good? Good questions! If you don't have a good pair of running shoes, you can most likely tell by the obvious wear-and-tear on the exterior, but another telling sign is increased foot pain, low back pain, knee pain, or hip pain. Sporting a good pair of running shoes can aid in the prevention of injuries and promote improved athletic performance. Running shoes are commonly broken up into three categories: neutral, stability, and motion control. Once you find your fit, it’s recommended to go up half a size over your normal shoes because your feet elongate during a run.

  • Clothing that’s comfortable and supports you.

Running jackets, shorts, shirts, and socks should not be purchased based on looks alone. It’s more important that the clothing fits you comfortably. For jackets, shorts, and shirts, wicking materials are ideal since they move moisture away from the skin. For socks, steer clear of cotton ones since they’re a big cause of blisters and opt for lightweight and breathable socks instead.

  • A hydration system of some sort.

How you decide to keep your water bottle with you, whether that's a hand-held water bottle with a strap or a waist belt or backpack, is up to you. What's key is having water convenient and near to you while you're running to ensure you stay hydrated.

  • A light or reflective vest

This is especially important if you're running in the dark in a high-traffic area. A light or reflective vest makes you more visible.

  • GPS devices

Nowadays, there are a lot of mobile apps where you can track your runs. Whether you're new to running or an avid runner, staying on top of how much activity is critical to achieving your health goals and avoiding overexercising.

  • Heart rate monitor

A heart rate monitor allows you to measure and display your heart rate in real-time and record it to see the trends. This is especially helpful for runners who are looking to precisely and accurately track the intensity of their runs and make sure they're setting a reasonable pace. Heart rate monitors conveniently are app-based, making it easy to access through a cell phone or wristwatch.

  • Sunscreen and sunglasses

Sunscreen and sunglasses aren't just for the beach! They both offer protection from the sun, which Don't forget sunglasses which will not only protect your eyes from the sun, but also from insects and the wind.
