What will physical therapy help me with?

Physical therapy can help with a wide variety of issues that people experience with their bodies.  At FYZICAL Lutherville, we specialize in helping people who have imbalance or a fear of falling, dizziness or vertigo, difficulty walking, or some other movement disorder.  We also treat temporomandibular joint disorder which is commonly known as TMD or TMJ.

Do I need a physician's referral to come to PT?

No, you do not.  Maryland is one of 20 states that allows patients total, unrestricted access to a physical therapist.  No type of physician referral is required for a physical therapist to treat a patient.  Some insurances have their own caveats to this, however.  For example, Medicare requires that the PT consult with the patient's physician regarding the plan of care if therapy lasts longer than 30 days.  If you would like further clarification regarding your specific situation, give us a call and we'd be happy to help!

Will my insurance cover physical therapy services?

Most insurance companies cover PT services.  It is advisable to call your insurance company prior to making your appointment in order to determine your benefits.

What should I expect for my first visit?

Your first visit to FYZICAL will be for an evaluation.  Your therapist will spend time talking with you about your medical history, your current concerns, and your goals for therapy.  Then, your therapist will perform many different tests in order to identify your strengths and impairments.  At the end, they will discuss the results of the examination with you and develop a plan of care that is specific to your individual needs.

How long is the evaluation?

The evaluation is one hour.  Please arrive 15 minutes early in order to complete any remaining paperwork.  All follow-up visits are 40 minutes.

What should I wear?

You should wear comfortable clothes or athletic wear (shorts or pants if possible) because you will be moving during your therapy session.  You should also wear closed-toe shoes with good traction such as sneakers.

How often will I be coming to physical therapy?

Your frequency will be determined after your initial evaluation and will be based on your individual needs and goals.  Frequency often changes throughout the course of therapy, as well, depending on how your situation progresses.

Will I see the same therapist every time?

Yes.  All of our sessions are one-on-one with the same therapist.  This will provide you with continuity of care.

I am concerned about COVID-19.  Is it safe for me to come to PT?

We understand your concern and are committed to keeping our clinic as safe for you as possible.  Our clinic has a street entrance that is accessible with a ramp so there is no necessity of entering a busy indoor lobby or using an elevator.  Masks are required throughout the entire treatment session.  All surfaces that you touch are thouroughly cleaned and sanitized.   If you would prefer to be treated in a private treatment room, please let us know.  If you have any concerns, please feel free to contact us with your questions.
