Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality In Healthcare
The new upcoming technology in medical care is the use of augmented reality and virtual reality to improve patient care. Researchers expect that use of advanced technology in patient care will allow real-time performance feedback, a more realistic environment, and could improve outcomes. However, studies are being conducted to determine the actual advantages and disadvantages of such high tech systems.
Augmented Reality (AR) is defined as a real time, boosted version of the surrounding environment via computer-generated imagery. For example, new AR systems superimpose medical images onto the patient for surgeries to help perfect a procedure. New technology allows AR to mimic a client home or work environment during a therapy session. They also expect that future AR technology will be able to aid in performance of a home exercise program.
Virtual Reality (VR) is defined as a computer-generated simulated and immersive environment that the user can interact with. These systems are becoming much more popular in physical therapy practice. For example, new VR systems can simulate a grocery store environment to help a patient with their dizziness. They have found that VR systems can positively affect neurological and musculoskeletal disorders to improve balance, coordination, and/or pain. Currently, researchers are studying VR effects for people with strokes, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, parkinson disease, spinal cord injuries and chronic pain. Most outcomes have been positive.
VR and AR systems are just starting to become integrated in physical therapy practice. Their use is still undergoing clinical research, but it is looking like advanced technology has a future in healthcare.
