Why does my Pelvic Floor Matter?

I want you to think about your back pain for a moment. Does it ever radiate into your legs? Do you ever feel it in your hips? Does it make standing or walking difficult? If you answered yes to any of these questions, it is likely that you also have some form of pelvic floor dysfunction.

And you’re not alone. Recent estimates of pelvic floor dysfunction occurring with back pain are as high as 95%. That means if you have back pain, you are most likely also suffering from some form of pelvic floor dysfunction (e.g., bladder leaks, constipation, pelvic pain). Addressing one without considering the other leaves you vulnerable to a flare-up.

When it comes to your back, support and strength have to come from your core. If all you think about when you hear core is “6-pack abs” then you’re missing a lot. Your core starts with your pelvic floor muscles. By relieving the pain in your low back and getting you moving again, we can really toward word improving your strength and help you return to the activities you love. When it comes to low back pain, all physical therapists are trained in orthopedic rehabilitation, but to keep your back pain from returning, you may need to seek the help of an expert in the rehabilitation of your core muscles. At the base of your core is your pelvic floor, these muscles are the foundation of your core, and there is no one better able to help you increase strength and range of motion than a pelvic floor physical therapist or women's health physical therapist.

When you see a physical therapist for back pain they should do 3 things:

1)            Relieve your pain. This is obvious, but it is only our first goal. We want to get you out of pain so that you can start o do the real work of getting back to doing the things you love to do.

2)            Increase your strength and range of motion. This second goal may take a little longer, but we want to make sure that you are working toward lasting recovery to take the pain away, but you need to have the strength and range of motion that supports a healthy back to keep the pain away. A big part of the strength of your low back is your pelvic floor muscles. These are the base, or foundation, of your core. A weak pelvic floor means a weak core, and a weak core may mean an increase in episodes of low back pain.

3)            Help you Love Your Life. Our final goal, and what we work on throughout your treatment, is getting you back to full functioning. If you leave treatment before you can return to running, golfing, or playing with your grandkids then you didn’t finish physical therapy. Getting out of pain is the first step, but we want to see pictures of you Loving Your  Life!

If you are suffering from back pain, with little relief, or if you are tired of having to manage your pain with medication, physical therapy might be an ideal component of your treatment. All you have to lose is pain.
