Nervous System Basics

Your nervous system has two parts: the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. The central nervous system (CNS) includes your brain and spinal cord and functions as the central processing station. The peripheral nervous system (PNS) includes the nerves that branch out from your brain and spinal cord. These nerves transmit information to your brain. The PNS is subdivided into the somatic and autonomic nervous systems. The somatic nervous system is involved in conscious activities and includes the nerves that go to the muscles and skin. The autonomic nervous system is involved in unconscious activities and includes the nerves that connect the visceral organs, including your heart, lungs, liver, pancreas, and intestines, to your CNS.,

When connections in any part of the nervous system are disrupted by a disease, disorder, or injury, neurological symptoms develop.
