Quarantine and Your Body

As we all know, this past year has brought a lot of changes. Quarantine has presented many challenges, including navigating grocery delivery apps and running out of shows to watch on Netflix. All jokes aside though, many of us have transitioned our homes into a ‘one-size-fits-all’ type of space … or does it?

Have you transitioned to working from home in the past year? Are you noticing new back pain, neck pain, or headaches? Many chronic back, neck, and shoulder pains can be traced to our posture, especially how we’re working. Here’s a few tips and tricks for making sure your posture stays on point:

  1. Keep moving during the day! Even if you have ideal posture, sitting still all day is going to leave you feeling stiff! Check out the video on @fyzicalsouthoakpark for a dynamic warm up you can do to break up your day.
  2. Set up your desk to promote good posture. You can use the picture below as a reference. Make sure your feet are supported on the floor and your screen is high enough to allow you to sit up straight.
  3. Have someone take a picture of you at your desk … when you’re not paying attention! Even if we think we’re sitting up straight, we might start to slouch when no one is watching. If you bring a picture of your posture in to your Physical Therapist, it can help us start to give you stretches and exercises that can help you sit up straighter and feel better.
  4. Don’t let a small problem become a big one! If you are starting to notice increased back, neck, or shoulder pain at the end of your work day, we can help. The sooner we can get you on the right track, the sooner you’ll be feeling like yourself and working hard.
