The days are getting longer and the sun will (hopefully!) shine bright, which means that summer activities like swimming, biking, hiking, and vacationing will be here before we know it.
If you're determined to make the most of your outdoor opportunities this upcoming season — but need to start an exercise routine — don't worry!
The good news is there's still plenty of time to get started on building an effective, sustainable workout regimen that can help get your body ready for those thrilling days spent exploring nature or lounging poolside.
Here are some insider tips on how to start an exercise routine and start now so you're prepared when summertime comes around.
5 Tips To Start An Exercise Routine To Prepare For Summer Activities
Find An Exercise You Enjoy
When you start an exercise routine, it's important to choose an exercise that you enjoy.
Most people begin to let their fitness regimen go when they dislike the exercise they've chosen. In order to maintain exercise you should choose something you really enjoy and that you won't get bored of in a few months' time.
If you do find yourself getting bored with your routine, you can always mix it up to keep it interesting by including different activities!
Start Small
If you're returning to exercise or new to an exercise routine, you should always endeavor to start small.
Pushing yourself too hard too early could result in an injury that could stop your exercise routine completely for a few weeks which you don't want to happen.
As you start your exercise routine, build up the intensity of your workouts as you feel yourself getting fitter and you will see fantastic results before long!
Get An Exercise Buddy
Finding someone you can start an exercise routine with can be really beneficial to make sure you stick to your regimen.
Having someone else there while you walk, jog, or swim can boost your mood, increase motivation and make it fun!
You can also hold each other accountable for achieving goals and attending sessions (you can even make it a little competition to boost your momentum!)
Set Realistic Goals
If you start an exercise routine with lofty goals, you will feel like you're not seeing much progress.
Setting smaller goals on a shorter timescale will make you feel like you can tick milestones off your list as you go rather than waiting until you reach your end goal to measure your success.
When you set small goals for yourself that are realistic and achievable, it can boost your mood and give you, even more, drive to keep on succeeding!
Warm-Up To Avoid Injury
In order to maintain your fitness routine and make sure you hit your goals by the summer, you should always make sure you're warming up before you exercise.
You will hear this a lot but we can assure you that it's vital to protect you from injuries such as sprains, strains and pulled muscles which can all be very painful and potentially stop you from reaching your end goal.
You should take at least 7 minutes to fully stretch the muscles in your body and get them prepared for the physical activity you're going to be doing.
Equally, after you've finished your exercise, you should also take another 7 minutes to make sure you fully cool down, stretch your muscles again, and loosen them up to prevent stiffness.
