3 Components of Balance

The month of September, Fyzical Therapy & Balance Center’s national campaign is Fight the Fall.  Each year our goal is to educate on proper evaluation, prevention, and physical rehabilitation of falling.  The week of September 18th-22nd, we are offering FREE fall risk screenings to help you or a loved one gain back their balance and feel more in control of their lives.

Falling occurs because the body’s balance has been disrupted through the person’s sensory and/or motor systems.  A person’s body can maintain balance because the brain receives and interprets information from several different types of senses:

  • Vision (from the eyes) helps orient you to your environment.  When our eyes are open, it is estimated two-thirds of brain activity is put towards vision, making it a large component of balance.

  • Proprioception, another factor, is joint position sense.  Your brain recognizes where your body is in space, and properly communicating to your muscles allows your body to make appropriate adjustments to stay balanced.

  • The vestibular system (from the inner ear) senses motion, equilibrium, and head position.  Based on these inputs, the brain sends information to different muscles of the body to help maintain balance.

At FYZICAL, we have changed the way balance and vestibular therapy is performed.  By using our Safety Overhead Support System, we keep patients safe while challenging them.  This helps to achieve the best possible results, without the fear of falling.

If you feel off-balance or dizzy, contact FYZICAL today to have your balance assessed. Our Physical Therapists will build a customized balance training program that will help you become more active and gain confidence in your movement abilities while performing everyday activities.
