Concussion Management
FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Centers Concussion Program
Concussion is a form of mild brain injury that occurs with a sudden acceleration or deceleration of your head. It is the most common type of brain injury and can be caused by contact sports, motor vehicle accidents, and falls. People can experience a wide range of symptoms after a concussion, including:
- Fatigue
- Ongoing headaches
- Irritability
- Loss of balance and frequent falls
- Dizziness and lowered blood pressure
- Muscle weakness and spasms
- Difficulty focusing or "brain fog"
- Problems with concentration
- Sensitivity to light and noise
Most symptoms of concussion begin to heal within the first 2 weeks after injury. However, some people can experience ongoing symptoms for months, known as "post-concussion syndrome".
How can FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Centers Help?
Physical therapy can be effective in addressing many of the common symptoms of concussion.
Headaches and neck and shoulder pain frequently occur after a head injury. Your physical therapist can use manual therapy and massage techniques as well as strengthening exercises to help reduce these symptoms.
Dizziness and poor balance can also occur due to a disruption of the inner ear or "vestibular" system. Exercises designed to improve vestibular functioning and reduce occurance of vertgio are crucial to recovery.
Fatigue can be exacerbated by required resting that early concussion recovery entails. This often results in weakened muscles and lowered endurance. To combat that, your physical therapist at FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Centers will customize a strength-building program for you, as well as guide you through aerobic moves that help you regain that endurance.
