What do I need to bring with me to my first visit?

You will need your insurance card(s), a photo identification, a list of current medications, your prescription for physical therapy for some insurances, a referral from your primary care physician is also needed.

If applicable, you will need your Workers’ Compensation or auto insurance information as well.

There is some clinical paperwork that will need to be completed. This can be done either prior to your visit by downloading the forms from the Patient Resources page, or you can arrive at the office 15 minutes in advance of your appointment to complete the paperwork. Our office staff will gladly help you review and complete your paperwork if needed.

Do I need a prescription from my doctor?

Maryland is an Open Access State. That means you have the right to be seen and treated by a physical therapist without first seeing your doctor, and receiving a prescription for physical therapy.

This allows you to begin your road to recovery faster, without waiting to see your doctor first. Addressing injuries earlier, can decrease the length of recovery, and need for treatment, reduce healthcare costs, and help return you to improved function faster.

Of course, if the treating therapist feels that you need further assessment by another health care professional, they may refer you for additional testing and/or consultation.

Although patients have the legal right to seek physical therapy services in Maryland without a prescription, many insurance providers require that you first see a doctor in order for them to reimburse you for your treatment. Medicare always requires a prescription.

You can check with your individual insurance provider to find out their requirements and our office staff will gladly assist if needed.

How do I know what is covered by my Insurance?

When you call for an appointment, our staff will acquire your insurance information. We will contact your insurance company to verify benefits. However, nothing quoted to our office staff is a guarantee of coverage or payment. We recommend that you also contact your insurance company, to verify your covered expenses for Physical Therapy in an office setting.

What should I wear?

We ask that you please wear loose-fitting clothing in order for your physical therapist to access the area(s) that need evaluation and treatment.

For example, please bring shorts or loose pants if your knee is involved.

We are able to provide gowns if you are unable to bring your own clothing.

Comfortable shoes or athletic shoes are also recommended to ensure proper support and safety during your sessions.

What can I expect on my first visit?

Our office staff will review with you your insurance benefits, highlighting your expected responsibilities.

You will fill out paperwork, if you have not already downloaded the forms from our website and filled out ahead of arrival.

You will then meet with a physical therapist for a comprehensive evaluation and together formulate a plan of care focused on your primary goals.

This first visit and subsequent visits will last approximately one hour.

Do I have to go to the physical therapist my doctor suggested?

Many doctors will recommend their patients to a specific physical therapy clinic, but the patient has the right to choose the “right” physical therapy clinic for them with no need to get a new referral.

Your doctor may want you to see a specific therapist due to clinical findings, or you may have insurance limitations. It never hurts to ask.

Also, if the clinic you wish to consult is not “in network” with your specific insurance carrier, many insurances have out of network options that still provide coverage. Just check first with your insurance provider.
